Aran knitwear for the whole family, including knitted jumpers for women, men, children and dogs, featuring cables and textured patterns

Aran knits for the whole family – 4 patterns featuring cables and texture

4 Aran-style knitting patterns for the whole family, featuring cables, textured patterns and classic knitted jumpers for women, men, children and dogs

Aran knitting is one of those types of knitting that almost tells a story all on its own 🧶
The distinct twists, textures and patterns create a classic and warm look that feels both traditional and timeless. This is knitwear with character! The sort where the stitches don’t just lie neatly side by side, but form small patterns, cables and movements across the surface.

In this collection, I’ve found four patterns for Aran-style knits for the whole family. There’s a knitted jumper for women, a knitted jumper in a men’s style, a children’s jumper in sizes 2 to 12 years, and of course a knitted dog jumper for the family’s four-legged friend 😉🐾

What all these patterns have in common is the classic Aran style, where cables and textured patterns help to create depth and detail in the knit.

Aran knitting is particularly well suited to cosy jumpers and winter projects, as the textured patterns often produce a rich and warm result. At the same time, it’s a technique that makes the knitting process itself exciting, as there’s always something new happening in the pattern.

The adult jumper (both the women’s and men’s styles) has a classic look, whilst the children’s jumper offers the same lovely Aran feel, just in a smaller size 🥰 And of course, our four-legged friends must be included too when we’re knitting soft and cosy garments for those chilly days 🐶

This article features a mix of different series; you might want to search for more in the “Ocean Ropes” and ”Snowy Trails” series to find more matching Aran-style knitting patterns.

If you’re a fan of cables, texture and knitting projects with a classic look, Aran knitting is the perfect place to find inspiration.

FAQ on Aran Knitting

What is Aran knitting?

Aran knitting is a classic knitting style, particularly known for its cables, braids and distinct textured patterns 🧶 The patterns create a beautiful relief effect in the knit and give the project more depth than plain stockinette stitch.
Aran-inspired designs are often used for jumpers, cardigans, hats and other cosy projects, where the texture is allowed to play a central role in the overall look.

What does ‘aran’ mean in ‘aran knit’?

The Aran knitted jumper takes its name from the archipelago off the west coast of Ireland, where the Aran Islands are situated.
The islanders were fishermen and farmers, and their lives and livelihoods were closely intertwined.
The Aran jumper originated in this community and has been passed down from generation to generation.
Over time, the Aran knit has become a symbol of Irish clan heritage.
For example, the historic Aran-knitwear shop in Ireland houses a vast archive of the various clans’ Aran knitting patterns.
You can find out more about Aran knitting on their website right here: Aran Knitwear (Note: in English only) I’ve visited their shop in Dublin several times myself. As a keen knitter, I’d highly recommend a visit 🇮🇪

Is Aran knitting difficult?

Aran knitting can vary in difficulty. Some patterns are simple, whilst others require more attention, particularly when working with multiple cables and charts. A little experience with knitting is sure to give you a head start, but you can always set your sights a bit higher 😉

Which projects are well suited to Aran knitting?

Jumpers, cardigans, children’s jumpers, hats and cosy accessories are well suited to Aran knitting, as the technique provides texture, warmth and a decorative look. Large blankets are also a popular choice because they really allow the beautiful patterns to be shown off to their best advantage.

Can Aran knitting be used for both children and adults?

Yes, absolutely – Aran knitting works well for children and adults alike, and the classic patterns can be adapted to many different types of knitting projects.
