In brief Drops Alpaca

Drops Alpaca yarn is a fine and soft alpaca yarn made from 100% alpaca. The yarn is spun from three strands, which provides a good balance between lightness, texture and shape retention. It has a natural, slightly luxurious look and a subtle sheen, making it particularly suitable for clothing and accessories.
Drops Alpaca is ideal for projects where you want a light yet warm result without using a thick yarn. It works well for stockinette stitch, lace patterns, textured knits, shawls, cardigans, jumpers and baby or children’s knitwear. The yarn can be used on its own for delicate, lightweight projects or combined with other yarns if you want more body, softness or texture.

How much Drops Alpaca yarn will you need?

Yarn consumption always depends on the pattern, size, tension, technique and whether the yarn is used on its own or combined with other threads. You should therefore always use the specific pattern as a guide when ordering yarn.

That said, Drops Alpaca comes in 50-gram balls, each measuring approximately 167 metres. It is a relatively fine yarn, so larger projects may require several balls. This is particularly true if patterns call for two strands or multiple colours.

Small accessories or details:  1–3 balls
It depends very much on whether the project involves multiple colours.
Take, for example, these knitted grey mice, which just need a little something for their noses and eyes:
Not a creature was stirring

Baby blanket: approx. 5 balls of Drops Alpaca
Take, for example, this knitted baby blanket in a lace pattern, measuring approx. 60 x 80 cm:

Children’s jackets:
Approx. 4 balls of Drops Alpaca for a size 3–4 years
Here is a knitted waistcoat with two-colour stripes, for which you will need
2 balls of each colour (and buttons) Viggo

Cardigans for adults:
A medium-sized cardigan for a child requires approx. 5 balls of Drops Alpaca yarn
Here is a knitted cardigan made from alpaca wool and kid silk, which, in addition to the alpaca, also uses 4 balls of kid silk:

Read more about washing yarn

Firstly, you should always consider whether the clothes only need to be aired rather than washed. If you decide to wash, here are some guidelines:

  • Hand wash 30ºC - separately - with a detergent without enzymes or optical brighteners.
  • Don't soak the garment, move it gently back and forth without lifting, scrubbing or twisting.
  • Rinse the clothes until the rinse water is completely clear, making sure to keep the water at the same temperature.
  • Spin the garment lightly (approx. 800 revolutions), choose a programme that does NOT take in water when you start the spin cycle. Or gently squeeze the water out of the clothes with a dry towel. Do not wring or roll the clothes.
  • Dry clothes flat in the correct shape and size - do not hang - preferably on a warm bathroom floor or on a drying rack in a room with good circulation, never in direct sunlight.
  • Do not tumble dry.

Please note: If you want to wash a project that is a combination of this and another yarn, follow the washing instructions for the yarn with the finest/most delicate fibres.

Frequently asked questions about Drops Alpaca yarn

What is Drops Alpaca yarn made of?

Drops Alpaca is made from 100% alpaca. It is a soft and lightweight yarn with a natural look and a subtle sheen.

Which yarn group does Drops Alpaca belong to?

Drops Alpaca belongs to yarn group A and corresponds to 5-ply / sport. It is a relatively fine yarn, suitable for patterns with a gauge of around 23–26 stitches.

Which needles are suitable for Drops Alpaca yarn?

The recommended needle size is 3 mm. The stated gauge is 24 stitches x 32 rows, which measures 10 x 10 cm. But always make a gauge swatch (even if you can’t be bothered ;) – you really don’t want to have to unravel it. Gauge swatches are particularly useful if you’re making clothes, where size obviously matters.

Can Drops Alpaca yarn be used for crochet?

Yes, Drops Alpaca can also be used for crochet. It is particularly suitable for light shawls, accessories, delicate blouses, trims and projects where you want a soft and warm result using a finer yarn.

Is Drops Alpaca soft?

Yes, Drops Alpaca is a soft alpaca yarn. As with any yarn, how it feels against the skin is very much a matter of personal preference. However, Drops Alpaca is generally a good choice for projects where softness and lightness are important.
For example, we often find that customers who find classic, traditional wool itchy have a better experience with alpaca wool yarn.

Is Drops Alpaca superwash?

No, Drops Alpaca is not superwash-treated. It should therefore be washed gently by hand and laid flat to dry.
Please refer to the specific washing instructions for the yarn.

Can Drops Alpaca be felted?

Yes, Drops Alpaca can felt. This is one of the reasons why you need to take care when washing it (if, for example, you don’t want the finished piece to felt).

What can I make with Drops Alpaca yarn?

Drops Alpaca is ideal for jumpers, cardigans, shawls, scarves, hats, baby and children’s knitwear, patterned knits and lightweight accessories. It is particularly well suited to projects where you want a soft, warm and lightweight result.
