In brief Drops Cotton Light

Drops Cotton Light is a soft blended yarn made from cotton and polyester. The cotton gives the yarn a natural and comfortable feel, whilst the polyester fibres help to provide shape retention, durability and a lighter weight than many pure cotton yarns.
This yarn belongs to yarn group B and is ideal for both knitting and crochet. It is particularly well suited to tops, T-shirts, blouses, cardigans, children’s clothes, baby projects, bags, tea towels, pot holders and light-weight projects for the home.
Drops Cotton Light is a good choice when you want a wool-free yarn that can be worn next to the skin and is also machine-washable. The yarn consists of many fine strands, which create a lovely, even stitch pattern, but when crocheting it can be helpful to work a little more carefully so that the strands don’t split ;)

Cotton Light thread is spun from several thin threads that produce neat and even stitches in the finished work. The microfibres are thinner than, for example, a silk thread and do not attract moisture. When the thin micro polyester threads are combined with cotton, you get a beautiful result that is breathable, durable and offers good dimensional stability.
Be aware of crochet In cotton light, the yarn splits easily because it is spun from the many fine smooth threads.

What can you use Drops Cotton Light yarn for?

Drops Cotton Light is a versatile yarn for both knitting and crochet. It is particularly well suited to projects where you want a soft, washable and dimensionally stable yarn that does not contain wool. It works well for both summer clothing and practical items for the home.

Tops, T-shirts and summer blouses

Crochet, lace patterns and texture

Drops Cotton Light is ideal for crocheted tops, ponchos, bags, shawls and projects featuring airy patterns. The yarn consists of many fine strands, so it may split slightly whilst crocheting, but on the other hand, it produces a lovely, smooth and defined result when you use a hook that suits your crochet tension. So if you’re experienced in working with this type of yarn, you can really achieve some lovely results!

Please note that

Drops Cotton Light is not a stretchy woollen yarn. It therefore behaves differently in garments than, for example, merino, alpaca or classic wool. Always make a knitting or crochet swatch (and test-wash it if it is for a garment, for example). When crocheting, the yarn may split slightly as it consists of many thin strands, so it is best to choose a crochet hook that glides easily through the stitches.

How much Drops Cotton Light yarn will you need?

Yarn consumption always depends on the pattern, size, technique, tension and whether the project is knitted or crocheted. You should therefore always use the specific pattern as a guide when ordering yarn.
Drops Cotton Light comes in balls of approximately 50 grams, and each ball contains approximately 105 metres. It is in yarn group B, so smaller projects can be made using just a few balls (depending on the number of colours).

Small details or decorations: Approx. 1–4 balls, depending in particular on the number of colours

Dishcloth or washcloth: approx. 1–2 balls, depending on size and pattern
Take a look at this knitting pattern for knitted tea towels, where each tea towel is made using 1 ball of yarn (knitted in a waffle pattern):
Clean & Colourful 4

Pot holder: Approx. 1 ball per pot holder; a knitted pot holder can weigh approx. 50 grams (i.e. 1 ball)
Here is an example of a patterned pot holder (which is why you need several balls of yarn), but one pot holder weighs, for example, just 53 grams.
The knitted pot holder features toadstools (fly agaric mushrooms) and berries. The pattern therefore requires 6 balls of yarn for a set of two pot holders: Mushroom Season Potholders

A small project for babies or children: approx. 3–7 balls, depending on size, sleeves and pattern

Crocheted net or bag: approx. 5 balls; a crocheted net may require around 250 grams of yarn (5 balls)
Take a look at this crocheted net featuring chain-stitch arches and double crochets, which can be made using just 5 balls of Drops Cotton Merino: Pacific Blues

Short-sleeved cardigan: 6–10 skeins
Take a look at this knitted jacket/cardigan with “T-shirt” sleeves, which can be knitted using 7 balls of yarn for a size Large (+/- 1 ball per size up or down): Mystic River

Knitted top for adults: 5–8 balls
It depends very much on the size, of course, but take a look at this knitted top with buttons, which can be knitted using 5 balls of Drops Cotton Merino for a size L (again, approximately +/- 1 ball for each size you go up or down): Juliet Blushes

Blouse or jumper for adults: 13–20 keys

Crocheted poncho: 12–18 keys

A rug or a larger interior design project: 10+ keys; this depends very much on the target, technique and density

For larger projects, we recommend that you buy yarn according to the specific pattern and take into account both the size and the tension. With crochet projects, the amount of yarn used is often greater than with knitting, especially if the fabric is dense.
The yarn requirements are, of course, merely a guide.

Read more about washing yarn

Here are some guidelines for washing cotton clothes. Cotton can have a tendency to shrink in the wash, so make sure you measure the garment before washing so you can mould it to the right dimensions after washing:

  • Machine wash - separately - on delicate wash 40ºC with a detergent without enzymes or optical brightener.
  • Never soak clothes or leave them in the washing machine for too long when it's ready.
  • Dry clothes flat in the correct shape and size - do not hang - preferably on a warm bathroom floor or on a drying rack in a room with good circulation, never in direct sunlight.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Any unevenness in the garment is smoothed out after washing or light ironing.
  • Never iron directly on the garment. Use a tea towel between the iron and the garment.

Please note: If you want to wash a project that is a combination of this and another yarn, follow the washing instructions for the yarn with the finest/most delicate fibres.
